2010 Presidents’ Sustainer Inspiration Award
A new Presidents’ Sustainer Inspiration Award was begun three years ago for the first time. This award is presented to a woman who embodies the Junior League of Akron mission of empowering women for positive change in the community. The award’s criteria are that it will be given to a Sustainer whose League and community service have inspired other League members, and whose League experience served as a springboard to for greater and more effective impact in the community. The winner of this award is Janice Skromme Alpeter of Akron.
A graduate of St Vincent/St Mary and the University of Akron, Janice worked as a French teacher in the Stow/Monroe Falls school district for many years and dedicated herself to the French Club and to the National Honor Society as adviser. In 1984 she won the Outstanding Educator Award, and in 2009 she was inducted into the Stow-Monroe Falls City Schools Wall of Fame for retired teachers that have demonstrated unusually high standards of character, achievement, and respect.
A Junior League of Akron member since 1992, Janice was involved in many aspects of the League, including the Loudspeaker, MarketPlace, Junior Leadership Akron, the Immunization Coalition, and the Oral Health Initiative.
In the years since Janice has continued her involvement in the community, holding leadership positions in the Women’s Auxiliary Board at Stan Hywet, where she has also been recognized for giving more than 1,000 volunteer hours, and with the Women’s Board of Summa Health System. Janice has also been involved coordinating volunteers and more for the United Disabilities Fundraiser, the Akron FoodBank fundraiser, and for the Crown Point Ecology Center annual fundraiser.
Most recently Janice has been serving the Junior League of Akron as Membership Development Coordinator.
